How to clean AI metadata from an image

Upload a ChatGPT, Midjourney, or other AI-generated image and choose Quick clean. RAIW removes the supported provenance fields it finds without treating ordinary Author or Copyright data as AI metadata.

  1. Upload a PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, or HEIC image.

Metadata cleanup without pixel changes

When you generate an image, tools like ChatGPT Images 2.0 (gpt-image-2), DALL-E, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, and xAI Grok embed hidden data fields into the file. These fields include EXIF AI tags, XMP DigitalSourceType, C2PA Content Credentials, and custom PNG text chunks.

Quick clean reads the file and removes supported AI-provenance fields. It normally preserves image pixels and dimensions; Standard output may resize a large image, and a container fallback may re-encode the file.

What is preserved?

Not all metadata is bad. Standard EXIF data (such as Author, Copyright, camera make, and lens information) is preserved by default. The tool produces a clean file that no longer carries signals linking it to an AI generator, but keeps the attribution you want.

How RAIW removes it

  • Grok: The current RAIW library recognizes two provenance fields in tested xAI Grok (Aurora) images: an EXIF 'Signature' blob and a UUID Artist tag. Other or future Grok signals may not be detectable.
  • Midjourney: Midjourney images can carry AI provenance metadata - EXIF/XMP fields and IPTC or C2PA tags that identify AI origin. RAIW strips the supported metadata found in the uploaded file for free.
  • Ideogram: Current Ideogram downloads may identify their origin through C2PA signed by Ideogram or through EXIF/XMP generator fields. RAIW reports and strips the supported file metadata for free.
  • Leonardo AI: Leonardo AI images carry their origin in the file's generator metadata - the EXIF Software or XMP CreatorTool field naming the tool. RAIW finds that tag and strips it for free.

Frequently asked questions

Will stripping metadata change the image quality or dimensions?
Quick clean normally preserves the image pixels and dimensions while removing supported AI-provenance fields from the file container. Standard output may resize images above the free resolution limit, and a container fallback may re-encode the file. Choose Original resolution when dimensions must stay unchanged.
Is standard EXIF data preserved?
Yes. Standard EXIF fields like Author, Copyright, and Camera data are retained by default. Only AI-specific provenance tags are targeted.
