How Etsy detects AI in product images
Etsy's detection reads three types of signals from uploaded files:
- C2PA Content Credentials - the primary trigger; most AI image generators embed these.
- IPTC
digitalSourceType- an XMP field marking the image as algorithmically created. - Perceptual hash matching - Etsy may compare images against a database of known AI-generated output.
RAIW removes the first two. Perceptual hash comparison operates on image content, which metadata removal alone does not change.
Why it matters for Etsy sellers
AI-generated images on Etsy must be labeled, and Etsy's automated detection can apply that label based on metadata alone. Sellers creating composite work — where AI was used for one element but the final product is substantially their own — may want to remove the automatic metadata signals and rely on manual disclosure decisions instead.
What RAIW removes
